Steven Universe: The Movie is a 2019 animated musical television movie based on the Cartoon Network series, Steven Universe.

Plot

Taking place two years after the events of the season 5 finale "Change Your Mind", Steven and the Crystal Gems must save all organic life from a new Gem named Spinel.

Why It Rocks

  1. The story is very well written as it continues after the events of the season 5 finale, and it manages to keep its peaceful and spirited tone that the show is widely known for.
  2. Most of the cast from the show reappears in this movie, and even though the Beach City residents appear as well, they thankfully don't take away any focus from the Crystal Gems.
  3. Awesome soundtrack.
    • "Happily Ever After" fully recaps the Crystal Gem's backstories for newcomers, and it shows how long the characters have come since the beginning.
    • "Other Friends" is a song sung by Spinel that is a great introduction for her character, as well as a great plot start up with her past connection to Pink Diamond.
  4. Phenomenal voice acting from all the characters. Especially Zach Callison as Steven Universe who's singing voice is very heavenly as 16-year-old Steven, and delivers a perfect amount of emotion into his performance. Sarah Stiles is also well cast as Spinel.
  5. Spinel, the main antagonist, is a very well sympathetic and relatable character. She was Pink Diamond's playmate who was abandoned by Pink Diamond when she left Homeworld to run Earth (Her new colony at the time), leaving Spinel waiting for her return for over six thousand years, and then eventually learning that she was gone when she had Steven. The abandonment she felt after realizing the truth is a very relatable trait for those who have suffered through abandonment. Her character design is also very cool.
  6. It introduces a new human fusion named Steg, who is a fusion between Steven and Greg.
  7. The animation is top-notch. It does not go off-model like in the show, and is nice to look at. Special mention goes to the animation used on Spinel, which is reminiscent of a 1930s cartoon.
  8. Good moral that when someone claims that they care about you, but they treat you very poorly, you're better off without them, and you should find someone new who will treat you better.
  9. Funny moments such as Pearl calling Greg "Um Greg Universe" while in her amnesiac form.

Bad Qualities

  1. Pink Diamond was very cruel to abandon Spinel in her flashback, as before getting her first colony. As in fact, cause many people in the fandom started to truly hate on her.
    1. Some speculate that Pink's constant abuse, combined with the fact that the diamonds took her Pearl away and inconsiderately replaced her with Spinel, could be the lead cause of this. (This still doesn't excuse Pink.)
  2. It is never explained how a gem like Spinel found the Pink Diamond-themed Giant Injector, the liquid inside of the injector and the Gem Rejuvenator.
    • Even Bismuth remembers the latter's functions and their use in Homeworld, she still didn't enough explained how Spinel find both them.
  3. A couple of things that weren't explained in this movie
    • We don't get to learn about what happened to White (originally Pink Diamond's) Pearl after the events of Change Your Mind.
    • We also never got to learn what was in the treasure chest in Lion's mane, as it was opened this time.
    • For some unknown reason, Jasper is absent in this film as well, though it's possible that she went back to Home World between the events of this film and Change Your Mind.

Reception

It was universally acclaimed by critics and fans alike, highlighting it for its characters, animation, and music, and viewing it also as approachable to newcomers.

What else would you call a Steven and Greg fusion? Greven?

How do they sound ridiculous? The fusion names are just names of other gems or combinations between their names. And I feel like not naming the fusions would be a bad idea since it's an essential part of the show and we need to identify them properly.

I don’t like this. Unlike most movies based on television. It doesn’t solve any plot threads or detail that the main series overall left out. Even Regular Show: The Movie resolves way more plot threads this.

Not only that. If someone would’ve keep Spinel Company. None of this would’ve happen.

Why didn’t they ask the Diamonds or some other Gem Expert to figure out how to deactivate the Gem Drill?

Since It reuses the structure that has been seen before which makes it predictable, less impactful, boring and less exciting.

Not only that. Spinel is also a a weak and predictable villain. While her backstory is justified. She isn’t really isn’t a very worthy opponent who just feels like to have just shoved in just for the sake of a plot device for more attention and when she’s fought for the first time she loved the gems then went for Steven and then got defeated in 30 seconds flat. All which is anti-climatic.

Spinel is anything but weak and predictable in my view. She's probably the most fleshed-out villain in the franchise since the SU villains were primarily dictators, but now it's an abandoned child who's owner left them just because of boredom and to have fun elsewhere.

I strongly disagree with that statement. I feel as though this one had much better animation, more charming fleshed-out characters, a coherent plot and a villain (accompanied with a brilliant voice actor and 1940's animation inspiration) that you can actually sympathize with because her diamond left her alone for 6,000 years to go play on Earth, which gave her paranoia. Not to mention the songs in this one actually have something meaningful to say or are just nice to hear. But I don't think Teen Titans Go To The Movies and Steven Universe: The Movie can be compared just because of that, since they both have completely different messages and the former embraces its self-awareness a bit more.

Really. Well the song don’t feel anything like catchy or really engaging than those from most media and the series itself. Also, Teen Titans Go movie has this very Nostalgic song called “Upbeat Inspirational song about life.” If you ask me it was pretty catchy unlie many songs in this movie plus Steven Universe movie only has 2 action scenes. While Teen Titans Go has many of them. Steven Universe should know that the entire world is not exactly how it seem. Many of us in the real world are bound to be bad at times or corrupted and sometimes there is nothing that we can really do. And that’s the truth. It is.

Not really. Spinel's portrayal in this movie is actually considered an improvement compared to how some of the other Steven Universe villains were portrayed. Jasper for example, her portrayal as a villain consists of having her reasons for her actions be revealed right after her arc of where the damage was already done, and her reasons don't even try to justify her actions.

Compared to Spinel, the Diamonds are less worthy of redemption. They have done countless immoral crimes for thousands of years, and yet they receive redemption in the end.

Spinel's characterization makes her actually deserving of redemption, and makes her sympathetic and the tone of going mad from abandonment.

In this movie, if Spinel wasn't really given any redemption, especially compared to the Diamonds who got redemption despite all there immoral actions, that would actually come off as hypocritical.

The idea of having a villain go through no redemption actually comes off as more generic, and that in turn wouldn't really do much for Spinel's portrayal.

Well, not every villain goes through redemption because they are essentially a lost cause. But still, making a villain not be redeemed over something that a already redeemed villain has done that is much worse just doesn't really seem a great step forward of quality, along with villains that don't get redemption or even character development over something that goes against what the story tries to tell. It's one of the reasons why I don't really like Boa Hancock from One Piece.

Well, maybe that’s true. But the world in Steven Universe is nothing compared to ours. They should know that sometimes an enemy will always be an enemy no matter how much they tried for them to be redeemed. Even Steven himself must realize that. Not everything is the way of how they seem. Even Wonder over Yonder show implies this.

Also, wasn’t this “Best friend leaves behind another friend” thing or something already used in other media. What about My Little Pony where Starlight Glimmer do these bad deeds because of his best friend Sunburst moved on to a new life and she didn’t? She got herself redeemed in the end.

Or the anime Kotoura-San where it is heavily dealt where her own mother leaves her all alone and all her friends and residents treated like crap? At least those are deliver very well and deep and those were released before the movie.

I mean the Diamonds not being forgiven should have been thought of, but I suppose they went with forgiveness because Steven making peace with the Diamonds was the only way to fix everything.

Still, even if you don't forgive someone, that doesn't justify inflicting death upon them. In fact, there are a lot of punishments that are worse than death that would still be considered justice.

The truth of reality? I think you mean the negative side of reality. Steven Universe mostly attempts to focus on the positive side of reality. And not everything about reality is all gloom and negativity. Sure, parts of reality are negatively influenced by greed and power, but there are also parts of reality that are positively influenced by optimism and consideration. The problem is that reality is flawed because it's made up of people who aren't perfect.

Yeah, I know. Basically there are 2 sides of humanity that are largely divided . One that really cares to save the environment and helping and animals from the troubles from them and prevents everything from rotting and extinction. And the other just carelessly do these horrible things for money.

And again. This movie just have a minor conflict that could’ve been avoidedin the first place. If Pearl and The Diamonds know Spinel, why didn’t they come back for her after Pink Diamond abandoned her over 6,000 years ago? They must’ve know where they keep her.
