Disturbia is a 2007 American thriller film directed by D. J. Caruso, written by Christopher Landon and Carl Ellsworth and stars Shia LaBeouf, David Morse, Sarah Roemer and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Summary

A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor is a serial killer.

Why It Rocks

  1. Spectacular acting, especially from Shia Lebouf, Aaron Yoo, Sarah Roemer and David Morse.
  2. The idea of a teenager (with a traumatic past) who’s under house arrest while spying on his suspicious neighbor to see if he’s a serial killer is very original.
  3. The writing for this movie is great.
  4. Likable, interesting and relatable characters, especially the main character Kale, his new neighbor/love interest, Ashley, and his best friend, Ronnie.
  5. The opening scene of Kale and his father ending up in a car crash and Kale’s father dying as a result is very tragic and heartbreaking.
  6. The reveal at the ending where Kale is shown to be right about Mr. Turner being a serial killer is an amazing twist.
  7. Satisfying ending, Kale gets free from house arrest, he starts dating Ashley, he kills Mr. Turner after it’s revealed he’s a killer and gets back at the neighboring boys who constantly prank and taunt him throughout the film.
  8. A good amount of funny, awesome and suspenseful moments that are all well-executed, like the scenes where Kale is spying on Mr. Turner after reading about missing women.
  9. The cinematography is decent and the POV shots are very well-done.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. Officer Gutierrez is not that great of a character as he takes advantage of his status as a cop and likes to continuously torment Kale for beating up his cousin (who happens to be Kale’s teacher).

Reception

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an approval rating of 69% based on 173 reviews, and an average rating of 6.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Aside from its clichéd resolution, Disturbia is a tense, subtle thriller with a noteworthy performance from Shia LaBeouf."

Disturbia grossed $80.2 million in North America and $37.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $117.8 million, against a budget of $20 million.
